چکیده

Received Day Month Year Revised Day Month Year We present theoretical predictions for the spectral, temporal and intensity signatures of the electromagnetic radiation emitted during the process of the gravitational collapse of a stellar core to a black hole, during which electromagnetic field strengths rise over the critical value for e + e − pair creation. The last phases of this gravitational collapse are studied, leading to the formation of a black hole with a subcritical electromagnetic field, likely with zero charge, and an outgoing pulse of initially optically thick e + e −-photon plasma. Such a pulse reaches transparency at Lorentz gamma factors of 10 2 –10 4. We find a clear signature in the outgoing electromagnetic signal, drifting from a soft to a hard spectrum, on very precise timescales and with a very specific intensity modulation. The relevance of these theoretical results for the understanding of short gamma-ray bursts is outlined.

Gravitational Waves from a Cosmological Distribution of Sources

The advent of gravitational wave detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna and the Advanced-Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory will make it possible to observe many gravitational wave emission phenomena that may or may not have electromagnetic counterparts. In many cases, gravitational waves serve as probes of length and time scales that range many orders of magn...

Black holes from nucleating strings.

We evaluate the probability that a loop of string that has spontaneously nucleated during inflation will form a black hole upon collapse, after the end of inflation. We then use the observational bounds on the density of primordial black holes to put constraints on the parameters of the model. Other constraints from the distortions of the microwave background and emission of gravitational radia...

Mode-coupling in rotating gravitational collapse: Gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations

We consider the late-time evolution of gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations in realistic rotating Kerr spacetimes. We give a detailed analysis of the mode-coupling phenomena in rotating gravitational collapse. A consequence of this phenomena is that the late-time tail is dominated by modes which, in general, may have an angular distribution different from the original one. In additio...

Observational Signatures of the First Stars

At present, there are several feasible observational probes of the first stars in the universe. Here, we examine the constraints on early stellar activity from the metallicity of the high-redshift Ly-α clouds, from the effects of stellar ionizing photons on reionization and the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and from the implications of gravitational microlensing results for the presence of...

D-branes in overcritical electric fields

We collect some arguments for treating a D-brane with overcritical electric field as a well-posed initial condition for a D-brane decay. Within the field theoretical toy model of Minahan and Zwiebach we give an estimate for the condensates of the related infinite tower of tachyonic excitations.
